About the Founder

Standing in front of flagsJoseph’s mother, Betsy Reed Schultz, has always found inspiration in her son’s example – his courage, his leadership, his deep belief in serving others. She founded Captain Joseph House Foundation as a living memorial to her son and to carry on his mission of serving others.

Betsy brings an incredible wealth of experience to that mission, most significantly a 24-year career in the field of Developmental Services. She provided support and assistance to clients of all ages, from birth to end of life. Much of her time included working with families as they worked through the loss of a loved one.

As a recent business owner in the hospitality industry, Betsy earned five consecutive years of First Place awards for outstanding service and a commitment to excellence for her guests. Betsy has served on several local boards, provided major fund raising expertise for local hospital foundation, seven years as a board director for Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce and most recently as President of that business organization. She was recently honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by the Soroptomist International of the Americas. Betsy pairs that background with a deep understanding of the ongoing struggles faced by the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
